ASSESSMENT OF BRITISH TEAM'S PERFORMANCE IN 1999 IAAF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN ATHLETICS

In previous years the success of British teams in major events has often been judged solely by medal count or the good or bad performances of one or two star performers. This page represents my attempt to try and give a balanced assessment of the overall performance of the whole team. Prior to the opening of the championships I assessed each athletes par performance, based on form and reputation, as given in the table below. After each day's action finished I recorded and published the achievements of each athlete and marked the differential (as per the performance levels given below) against par for those whose competition had finished. For instance an athlete predicted to reach the semi-final who reached a final scored +1. An athlete predicted to win a medal who only reached a semi-final scored -2. Any athlete winning a gold medal also received one additional bonus point. By totalling the scores against par it was possible to assess whether the team performed better or worse than expected (the higher the positive score the better). Athletes who withdrew before their event commenced were not counted in the overall score. In the event that a qualifying round of an event was cancelled any par performance set at that round was reset to the previous round.

Please note that although the table below implied Britain would win 9 medals, in normal circumstances only around 50% would achieve this standard so a total of 4-5 medals (less than the 7 actually won) seemed more likely.
