OLYMPIC GAMES MEDALLISTS - NORDIC SKIING

Nordic Skiing encompasses the disciplines of cross country skiing and ski jumping. Since 1988 cross country events have been limited to one of two styles of skiing - Classical in which the skis remain parallel and Freestyle in which there are no restrictions thus enabling use of a skating technique. Cross country races are held on a "time trial" basis except for sprint races (head-to-head), the second leg of combined pursuits prior to 2006 or nordic combined events (competitors started at timed intervals based on their performance in the first leg), combined (or "double") pursuits from 2006 (mass start with no break between the two legs), relays (mass start) or where otherwise indicated. From 1960-1988 ski jumping events were restricted to hills of a certain height (70-90 metres), whilst from 1992-2002 were restricted to hills of a specific "K" value (K90-K120). In 2003 Johann Muehlegg ESP, Olga Danilova RUS and Larisa Lazutina RUS were stripped of all the medals they won in the 2002 Games as a result of drug infringements.
