OLYMPIC GAMES MEDALLISTS - OTHER WINTER SPORTS


CURLING

Curling was included as a demonstration sport in 1924 (and subsequently granted full medal status in 2006), 1932 (winners: Manitoba CAN), 1988 (winners: men - Norway, women - Canada) and 1992 (winners: men - Switzerland, women - Germany) before achieving medal status in 1998. In addition a German version of the game (Eisstockschiessen or Ice Shooting) was demonstrated in 1936 (winners: single distance - Georg Edenhauser AUT 154.6m, single target - Ignaz Reiterer AUT 15, team - Tyrol AUT 2053) and 1964 (winners: single distance general - Peter Hörl AUT 158.9m, single distance senior - Ludwig Wagner GER, single target - Johann Rottensteiner AUT, team - E.C. Frauenau 1953 GER).

FREESTYLE SKIING

Aerials (winners: Jean-Marc Rozon CAN & Melanie Palenik USA), Ballet (winners: Hermann Reitberger FRG & Christine Rossi FRA) & Moguls (winners: Håkan Hansson SWE & Tatjana Mittermayer FRG) were included as demonstration events in 1988. Moguls was formally added to the Olympic programme in 1992 whilst Aerials (winners: Philippe Laroche CAN & Colette Brand SUI) and Ballet (winners: Fabrice Becker FRA & Conny Kissling SUI) were again held as demonstrations. Aerials was included as a medal event for the first time in 1994, however Acro (previously known as Ballet) was no longer included as a demonstration event nor has been subsequently added to the formal programme.

DEMONSTRATION SPORTS

Many of the sports held as demonstration events at the Winter Olympic Games have gone on to become part of the formal Olympic programme. Those, however, that haven't include Ski Jöring (Skiing behind a horse; 1928 - winner: R. Wettstein SUI on Jallange), Dog Sled Racing (1932 - winner: Emile St. Goddard CAN 4:23:12.5), Winter Pentathlon (10km Cross Country Skiing, Shooting, Downhill Skiing, Fencing & Horse Riding; 1948 - winner: Gustav Lindh SWE 14), Bandy (1952 - winners: Sweden) and Speed Skiing (1992 - winners: Mickaël Prüfer FRA 229.299kph & Tarja Mulari FIN 219.245kph).
