United Kingdom Track and Field All-Time Lists

WORLD MODERN PENTATHLON CHAMPIONSHIPS

Modern Pentathlon comprises the disciplines of pistol shooting, épée fencing, freestyle swimming, show jumping (originally cross country riding) and cross country running. The event was originally held over 4 or 5 days however since 1993 has been held on a single day. Before 1954 scores were calculated by adding the competitors placings in each event, however since that date scoring tables have been used. The sport was administered directly by the IOC (International Olympic Committee) until the formation of the UIPM (Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne) in 1948. Between 1960 and 1993 the international body was also responsible for the winter sport of biathlon (cross country skiing and rifle shooting) and was known as the UIPMB. UIPM/UIPMB men's World Championships have been staged annually from 1949 onwards, excepting in Olympic years from 1952 until 1996 inclusive. A women's championships was introduced in 1981 and relay championships in 1989 (men) & 1991 (women). Both team and relay competitions are contested by 3 modern pentathletes. A list of medallists in the Olympic Games is also available on this site.
